This was a banner year for products liability litigation plaintiffs. Our finalist firms helped clients challenge and expose the dangers of accelerating engines, talc when used for feminine hygiene products and the tobacco industry’s products. The winning firm in this category focused explicitly on automobile engines and the faulty ignition ­switches that allegedly led to car crash deaths. With allegations of thousands of wrongful deaths pending, that firm moved quickly to negotiated a deal with General Motors; the auto ­giant agreed to pay $575 million to settle the bulk of those claims, along with a shareholders’ class action. And it happened at a remarkable pace.
