A new lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. alleges that the device maker had problems with exploding smartphone batteries even before the recent recall of its Galaxy Note 7, leaving at least one man with third-degree burns.

The suit filed in New Jersey, where Samsung Electronics has its U.S. headquarters, claims that a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone purchased by plaintiff Daniel Ramirez exploded in his pants pocket in May. Ramirez alleges he burned his fingers as he removed the phone, and was left with third-degree burns on his thigh that required skin graft surgery.
