A group of Federal Trade Commission attorneys will be in Chicago federal court on Monday to begin a closely watched trial seeking to block the merger of two hospital systems that would create a $6.5 billion health care giant.

If the government attorneys appear confident, it may be due to their agency’s recent track record challenging hospital deals: The agency has mostly prevailed in fighting hospital mergers nationwide since 2008, when it scuttled another attempted merger in Chicago.
