U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen Jr. demurs when asked which law firm he’ll join after he steps down April 1. But based on how he describes what he’s looking for in a firm, he seems likely to go back to his roots as a big firm litigator.

A “global practice.” A strong investigations practice. A firm “that gives you a platform to really grow.” That could describe many of Washington’s largest firms, including Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, where Machen spent eight years before he was confirmed in 2010 as the U.S. attorney in Washington.
