A religion scholar endorsed by The Humanist Society has sued the U.S. Department of Defense after the U.S. Navy denied his application to be a chaplain.

Jason Daniel Heap, a certified humanist celebrant who can perform funerals, weddings and other ceremonies, was denied an application to serve in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps on May 27. The suit, filed on Nov. 5 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, where Heap lives in Arlington, challenges the constitutionality of the U.S. Navy’s refusal to recognize The Humanist Society as a religious organization that can provide chaplains.
