Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) filed suit this week against the Social Security Administration on behalf of a widow seeking survivor benefits following the death of her same-sex spouse.

The plaintiff, Deborah Tevyaw, is Rhode Island resident who has sought Social Security benefits since her wife, Patricia Baker, died in 2011. Her lawsuit names Carolyn Colvin, the agency’s acting commissioner. The couple married in Massachusetts in 2005.
