Former Microsoft Corp. chief executive officer Steve Ballmer completed his purchase of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team on Aug. 12 for $2 billion. The deal closed after a Los Angeles probate judge finalized a July 28 tentative order rejecting claims by Donald Sterling that his estranged wife, Shelly Sterling, conspired with her attorneys to oust him from a family trust that owned the team. Shelly Sterling, who along with Ballmer initiated the court battle after her husband revoked the trust, said, “I am thrilled that the Clippers now have such a wonderful new owner.”
SANCTUARY FROM EBOLA
With an Ebola outbreak raging in Africa, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on Aug. 15 announced new options to forestall deportation for people from Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone. Nationals from those countries in the United States on a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, such as a tourist visa, can get an extension, even if the visa has already expired. Immigrant petitions filed by people already in the United States and who have U.S. citizen relatives will go to the front of the processing line, as will employment authorization applications.
