North America has the lowest percentage of companies with antibribery policies of any region in the world, according to the latest statistics from The Conference Board Inc. Only 22 percent of North American corporations have adopted such policies, compared with 61 percent in Europe, 54 percent in Latin America and 30 percent in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the analysis. The board looked at Standard & Poor’s Global 1200 companies.

Matteo Tonello, managing director for corporate leadership for the board, wasn’t surprised by the numbers. “Europe and Asia fare better than North American companies on this issue for the same reason as they outperform in terms of sustainability disclosure,” he said. “In general, Europe and some Asian countries — notably Japan — have a longer tradition of communication to a broad spectrum of stakeholders on key issues pertaining to their sustainability culture, and anticorruption policies is one of them.”
