Florida’s First District Court of Appeal court on September 26 vacated the aggravated assault conviction of a woman sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a single shot into the ceiling of her home during a domestic dispute. Marissa Alexander’s conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon rested largely on a set of jury instructions — which the appellate court said represented a “fundamental error” — that put the burden on Alexander to prove that she fired in self defense.

THREE CHARGED IN LIBOR PROBE

The Justice Department announced criminal charges on September 25 against three former brokers at London-based brokerage firm ICAP PLC. They were accused of scheming with a senior trader at UBS A.G. to spread false information to banks involved in the setting of the London interbank offered rate, or Libor, a global benchmark interest rate. Senior prosecutor Mythili Raman said the department continues to investigate “a number of financial institutions” worldwide. “We’re not done,” she said.
