The name is Gaelic and the global headquarters moved to London last year, but the roots of Aon PLC are all Chicago. The product of a 1982 merger between two Chicago insurance giants — Combined International Corp. and Ryan Insurance Group — Aon (meaning "oneness") operates in two primary fields today, insurance-reinsurance brokerage and human resources services. Aon's U.S. headquarters is still in Chicago, and the company reported global 2012 revenue of $11.5 billion and a payroll of 65,000 workers in 120 countries.

LEGAL TEAM

Peter Lieb is based in London, supervising 145 lawyers in 25 countries. He said the size and composition of the company's legal team didn't change with the U.K. move. Although news reports stressed the tax advantages of the relocation, Lieb said the main reason was that it "helped us in the way we do business." He added, "There are 400 insurance companies in London, and they're important partners."
