Like the rest of the country, the Richmond, Va., legal community suffered during the recession. Things haven’t returned to pre-2008 levels, but demand for legal services have improved for practices like financial services, government contracts and corporate law.

The capital of the commonwealth is home to the Fifth District of the Federal Reserve. As a result, a large number of financial institutions put down roots in the city and, more broadly, the state as a whole. "Virginia has a strong financial-services base, including banks and mortgage companies," said Curtis Manchester, managing partner of Reed Smith’s Richmond office. "Recently, there has been a modest increase for legal advice related to financial services."
