In recent months, we sat down with managing partners at Washington firms small and large to take an inside look at what it’s like to sit at the top. In the 10 interviews that follow, the managing partners discuss the business of their firms — deciding where to rent office space; organizing key practice groups; juggling their managerial responsibilities in the face of pressing demands by clients.

Most of the partners themselves maintain robust practices. Aside from business, the question-and-answer sessions gave them the opportunity to talk about their personal lives — including hobbies and passions. Whether serving on the board of a university or flying across the country and back to attend a child’s sporting event, each attorney has a story to tell. All the interviews took place in person at the firm in question, often in the partner’s office. The remarks herein have been edited for length and clarity.
