The name says it all: Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. is best known for its glazed doughnuts, famously served fresh and hot at nearly 700 outlets throughout the United States and in 20 other countries.

The company was founded in Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1937 and grew steadily. Continued expansion followed its acquisition in 1976 by Beatrice Foods, which tried to save money by altering the original recipe. In 1982, a group of franchisees organized a leveraged buyout and brought back the original doughnuts. Today, the company owns about 90 outlets; the rest are franchises.
