NEW YORK — A state trial judge has dismissed a wrongful termination suit filed by a United Methodist Church agency employee, holding that adjudicating the dispute would require him to violate the First Amendment by interpreting the denomination’s religious code of conduct.

New York County, N.Y., Supreme Court Justice Charles Ramos’ January 29 ruling examined the precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court last year in Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church & School v. EEOC, which held that religious institutions’ choice of religious leaders is exempt from federal discrimination laws.
