The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on January 24 threw out a jury’s $170 million trade secrets award to Bratz doll maker MGA Entertainment Inc. — an award procured on retrial after the appeals court wiped out Mattel Inc.’s $100 million copyright verdict in its long fight over the Bratz line.

PENSION PROBLEMS

Detroit law firm Butzel Long has asked a federal agency to take over its pension plan due to a major shortfall in ­funding. The 140-attorney law firm filed papers on January 19 seeking relief from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., firm president Justin Klimko said. The plan has a market value of about $33 million, roughly $9 million below its target level.
