Efforts to save Dewey & LeBoeuf appear to have reached a dead end, with sources familiar with its operations reporting that the firm would close by May 15. Dewey has shed nearly 100 partners since January and faces payments including a reported $75 million due to its banks and another $150 million in bond debt. Morton Pierce, former chairman of predecessor firm Dewey Ballantine, decamped to White & Case. A three-partner team in London left for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

YOO CAN’T BE SUED

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that former Bush administration lawyer John Yoo cannot be sued personally for authorizing the torture and detention of an American citizen deemed an enemy combatant. The court said that it was not “beyond debate” at the time that suspected terrorists were entitled to the same constitutional protections as ordinary accused criminals. In fact, the court held, that law remains unsettled to this day.
