Last week, the attorneys of Janis, Schuelke & Wechsler announced the dissolution of their firm after more than 32 years. “It was a hard decision to make because we were in a comfort zone for so long, and we were very successful,” N. Richard Janis, now a partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, said in an interview.

The attorneys decided to break up their white-collar defense boutique to better serve the time commitments of the attorneys, Janis said. Janis, Henry “Hank” Schuelke III and Lawrence Wechsler started working together at the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington four decades ago. When the firm was founded, the Department of Justice was ramping up its white-collar enforcement. “When we first started our law firm, those were the days when most law firms didn’t want to have a criminal practice,” Janis said. “Our timing was very good.” But in today’s climate, he said, it would be more difficult to establish a white-collar boutique, as most firms have a robust white-collar practice.
