One of the most active drillers of natural gas wells in the United States, Chesapeake Energy Corp. is the country’s second-largest producer of natural gas and a major producer of oil. The company owns drilling, pumping, trucking and other oil-field services assets.

During the past few years, Chesapeake has focused on discovering and developing so-called unconventional natural gas and oil fields. That means using seismic technology and drilling advances including “fracking” — a technique for fracturing gas-producing rocks at great depths and pumping out the resource. The company is pursing fracking throughout the country, including in Colorado, Louisiana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
