It was a treasure trove for U.S. Supreme Court buffs: an estate sale on Dec. 2 and 3 at the home in Northwest Washington of the late Justice Potter Stewart.

The thousands of people who attended, including former law clerks, could pick from stacks of books and Court memorabilia. Also for sale: a closetful of Stewart’s tuxedos and a rack of gowns worn by his wife “Andy.” Stewart served from 1958 until Sandra Day O’Connor replaced him in 1981. He died four years later. Stewart’s widow and other family members live in New England now. Sloans & Kenyon Auctioneers handled the sale, and plans an auction of remaining items in February.
