The push by Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society to create a large-scale digital library got a $5 million boost on Oct. 21.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Arcadia Fund announced that they will jointly contribute $5 million to the center’s Digital Public Library of America project, which would include collections from museums, libraries, and additional archives. The project, launched in 2010, is being coordinated by the center but involves a wide array of participants, including the government, libraries, museums, foundations, and academics. The concept of a national digital library has bounced around since the early 1990s but has yet to be realized.
