Lawyers in nearly 100 lawsuits against Toyota Motor Corp. in California are getting one step closer to trial, with deliberations underway about which case should go first and depositions set to begin of dealers who sold allegedly defective vehicles.

The cases, which have been consolidated in Los Angeles County, Calif., Superior Court, are separate from the more than 200 cases pending in multidistrict litigation against Toyota in federal court in Santa Ana, Calif. But discovery in the state cases — and the resolution of the first trial — could shape the federal actions against Toyota.
