David Doyle has mastered the job of explaining patent law and its application to life sciences in a way that doesn’t leave jurors saying, “Huh?”

In January 2009, Doyle, a partner in the San Diego office of Morrison & Foerster, took on the defense of the San Francisco Bay Area’s Applied Biosystems Group (A.B.), a unit of the $3.3 billion Life Technologies Corp., against allegations of patent infringement. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California jury already had ruled for the plaintiff in the case, Illumina Inc., during an earlier phase of the trial concerning the patents’ ownership.
