Toyota Motor Corp.’s stock plummeted on Jan. 27 on news that the company would shut down its U.S. production plants for a week ­following a series of recalls. The response from shareholders was almost immediate. They sued to recover millions of dollars, and some of the nation’s most prominent plaintiffs’ firms moved for the coveted position of lead counsel.

They soon hit roadblocks.
