Bell, Boyd & Lloyd, a midsize Chicago law firm, is losing groups of attorneys as it grapples with the question of how to expand in a megafirm market. Lawyers who have left the firm say the departures grew partly out of disenchantment with the firm's approach to growth under a management team that so far has sidestepped a merger. Although Bell Boyd has reputedly engaged in merger talks in the past year with Alston & Bird and Hunton & Williams, longtime chairman Jack McCarthy said it hasn't yet found a good fit.
