Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is returning to Harvard Law School, where he earned his law degree, to teach and write as the Byrne Professor of Administrative Law and Process.

Breyer, who once said he would have been a teacher if he didn’t go to law school, stepped down from the high court on June 30 when the court completed issuing opinions from the October 2021 term. He joined the high court in 1994. His successor, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a former Breyer clerk, took her judicial and constitutional oaths on June 30.
