As congressmembers grilled executives on Wednesday over the nation’s infant formula shortage, manufacturer Abbott Laboratories faced increased scrutiny in lawsuits over its Michigan plant, which was shut down due to unsanitary conditions.
Abbott executive Christopher Calamari appeared on Capitol Hill alongside representatives of infant formula manufacturers Gerber and Reckitt to address solutions to the infant formula shortages. The problem was exacerbated when Abbott closed its plant in Sturgis, Michigan, earlier this year and recalled formula after two babies died from ingesting products made at that facility.
