Attorneys in the civil jury trial over the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, made their closing pitches to the jury Thursday, bringing the four-week trial to a close.

Karen Dunn, a partner with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, began the plaintiffs’ closing statement by walking the jury through the law on conspiracy. She stressed that jurors don’t have to find that every defendant had a formal agreement with the other defendants to commit racially motivated violence in order to be part of the conspiracy. Instead, Dunn said, the jurors had to find the defendants were in agreement to commit the violence, or to at least further it, with the deadly car attack being a reasonable outcome of that conspiracy.
