A federal judge in Washington, D.C., on Friday ordered the release of a rioter at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, overturning a magistrate judge’s finding that the man must be detained because he was unlikely to believe in the legitimacy of the court.

Chief U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell reversed the pretrial detention order for Couy Griffin, a New Mexico county commissioner and founder of the group “Cowboys for Trump,” finding that statements he made about Democrats and the legitimacy of the government were “deeply troubling” but not enough to necessitate his detention.
