With future legal battles over security and privacy all but certain, lawyers say the Federal Trade Commission’s new report on the “Internet of Things” provides helpful guidelines, but few hard and fast answers.

According to the FTC, there are about 25 billion connected devices in use worldwide, objects such as fitness monitors and smoke detectors that connect to the Internet to send and receive data. The number is expected to double by the end of the decade as automakers, health care providers and other consumer goods companies increasingly incorporate the technology into their products.
