After a two-year legal battle between major broadcasters and startup Aereo, the U.S. Supreme Court heard the case on April 22. As Brian Stelter explained in an entry on CNNMoney, the case raises crucial questions about copyright law and could have far-reaching implications for television and technology companies, as well as impacting the way people watch television programming.

Aereo has been accused of stealing the creative content of others. According to the story, the service “scoops up the freely available signals of TV stations,” employing thousands of arrays of tiny antennas so each viewer gets an individual antenna, which streams the signals to the phones and tablets of paying subscribers. This turns those devices into television sets without the need of a physical antenna.
