The World Wide Web has a new governor: The Global Commission on Internet Governance. According to a post on the Hunton & Williams’ Privacy and Information Security Law blog the commission was announced this week at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland by Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Carl Bildt, who will serve as its chair.

“Net freedom is as fundamental as freedom of information and freedom of speech in our societies,” Bildt said, when announcing the initiative, according to Hunton & Williams. The initiative is launched by Chatham House and The Centre for International Governance Innovation—both think tanks. The commission will focus on governance legitimacy, innovation, individuals’ rights online and system risks. At the end of the two-year period, they’re expected to produce a final report on Internet governance.
