In-house lawyers are eager to take advantage of new technologies like e-billing software and video conferencing that can help save time and money. But getting access to this technology is an uphill battle, according to a recent survey.

For their annual “Looking Glass Report,” the law firm Eversheds and the market researcher Winmark Ltd., collected feedback from in-house counsel to find out how they’re using technology. The survey found that increasing efficiency is the top strategic priority for 68 percent of in-house legal departments. And in-house counsel sees technology as a way to achieve this efficiency, the results show. Eighty-seven percent of the in-house counsel respondents said technology would improve information storage and retrieval, 61 percent said it would improve the automation of routine work and 60 percent said it would create better workflow management.
