The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly growing market segment—Gartner research estimates that IoT product and service suppliers will exceed revenue of $300 billion by 2020. However, that estimate may actually be on the lower end of the scale, especially as one of the major names in technology has now made its long-awaited entry into the IoT arena.

On Oct. 8, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced AWS IoT, a new platform aimed at connecting devices to AWS services to help companies store, process, analyze, and act on the data generated by those connected devices. Devices connect to AWS IoT’s Device Gateway, and from there, manufacturers can set rules based on when certain device conditions are met (such as shutting off a device when a motion sensor is triggered).
