Scott Rechtschaffen has always been known to tackle weird projects at Littler Mendelson. He might not have a technologist’s history, but even so, he was the guy that everyone pointed to when the firm wanted to come up with some innovative ideas. An early-2000s strategic planning meeting just happened to be the most significant of those times.

“The issue we discussed was, how do we maintain quality? How do we make sure that the attorneys in Atlanta are providing the same service as the attorneys in New York? And how do we make sure that we’re not a thousand individual silos of information with what we know locked up in our heads, our file cabinets or our hard drives?” Rechtschaffen says. “And someone said, ‘I’ve heard about this thing called knowledge management,’ and everyone pointed their finger at me and said, ‘Find out what that’s all about.’”
