The word “alternative” brings to mind the idea of being hip and forward thinking. Just think about the ideas behind alt-rock and alternative medicine—it’s outside the norm and something that appeals to people that are looking for a different answer. Former Kirkland & Ellis attorney turned entrepreneur Nehal Madhani wants Alt Legal to be the alternative step.

Plainlegal, an intellectual property management software-as-a-service company based in New York City, has rebranded itself as Alt Legal, the company said. Madhani, the founder and CEO of the company, said that as intellectual property companies continue to innovate, the company thought it was important to stress that they were putting forth an alternative, better way to practice law.
