Beware Cisco Systems customers: The company says that hackers have begun an “evolution in attacks” against Cisco IOS Classic software platforms.

On August 11, Cisco issued an alert notifying customers that the company had observed increasingly complex attacks, in which attackers had been able to completely hijack critical networking gear. The attack was conducted by replacing the Cisco IOS ROMMON (or ROM Monitor), the means for booting Cisco’s IOS operating system, with a malicious ROMMON of the attacker’s choosing.
