The future of law lies with the “solopreneur” lawyer, says Matt Faustman, CEO of online legal marketplace UpCounsel. “On a macro level, the economy is moving more towards freelancing and more people are living as independent entrepreneurs. The legal industry is certainly a part of this and they’re embracing it.”

However, there’s still the issue of connecting those solo lawyers—who often have limited marketing capabilities—with the corporate clients they want to serve. That’s where Faustman wants UpCounsel to come in. The marketplace provides lawyers with free practice management, marketing, document, and payment tools, and offers assistance on collections and payment plans for lawyers. For general counsels and corporate clients, it also provides a list of lawyers to work on any job.
