The vectors of cybercrime are many and varied, as are the motivations for breaking into a protected database or system. Although the anonymity of the Internet can make it difficult to identify who is behind these attacks, understanding how these attacks happen, and what they target can help corporations bolster their defenses. Two research reports released in April focused on this component of the cyberdefense challenge: Verizon’s Data Breach Investigation Report (DBIR) and Symantec Corp.’s Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR).

While focused on a similar topic, each report concentrates on different aspects of the challenge, providing valuable insight into how threats manifest for corporations.
