Google could face retroactive compensation claims from French news publishers as a result of its latest settlement of antitrust complaints over the search giant’s use of their content, a media law partner in Paris told Law.com International.

The French Competition Authority last week announced a €250 million ($270.2 million) fine against Alphabet, the parent company of Google, and three operating units—Google LLC of the U.S., Google Ireland, and Google France—for failure to comply with commitments made in a 2022 settlement of French publishers’ complaints regarding compensation for Google’s use of their content.
