The EU approved a new series of standard contractual clauses (SCC) earlier this month that introduce a new, modular approach to the way that data transfers are governed. Unlike the old SCCs, which were adopted in 2001, the new clauses may provide businesses with some much needed guidance for navigating the complexity of modern data transfers—once they’ve been deciphered, anyway.

“It’s something that my clients are finding quite difficult to apply,” said Sarah Pearce, a partner at Paul Hastings.
