While corporate legal departments’ awareness of the legal tech market is increasing, the depth of knowledge regarding the sector’s offerings is fairly shallow. Still, general counsel and consultants say that such knowledge may grow as legal ops functions become more widespread and corporate attorneys turn to their peers, and even law firms, to help them navigate the legal tech landscape.

The main culprit hindering corporate legal departments’ understanding of legal tech is limited resources, said Claudia Cantarella, chief legal officer at fintech solutions developer Broadway Technology.

“I would like to think I stay on top of and am aware of what the legal technological developments are, and I’m certainly looking at publications and talking to my peers, but I think there probably could be more done to specifically target in-house counsel,” she said. “We don’t have the time to parse through and find the optimal technologies that would benefit us.”
