    Travers partner joins BoE in midst of crisis

    Travers Smith has boosted its ties with the Bank of England (BoE) after agreeing to second corporate partner Anthony Foster to the institution. Foster, who was promoted to the partnership this year, joined the bank recently for a short-term secondment.The placement, likely to be for around six months, is thought to be to help the bank out with the current turmoil.The City firm has regularly advised the bank in the past but only on the employment side and it currently has an associate from the group seconded to the client as part of a regular placement programme.

    UBS general counsel Peter Kurer has been confirmed as the new chairman of the Swiss banking giant following its annual general meeting yesterday (23 April). Kurer, who has been acting as chairman of the board in an interim capacity, takes up the top role with immediate effect, his appointment having been approved with 87% of the vote. Shareholders additionally voted to reduce the terms of the board of directors from three years to just one.

An appeal tribunal heard yesterday that Switalski, who alleges that she was forced from her job at F&C as a result of sexual discrimination and harassment, is seeking the massive compensation figure.

Legal Week has learned that Weil Gotshal has started to rebuild its relationship with the bank after settling the dispute last year. Partners concede that they did not receive work during the long-running dispute but, now the claim has settled, the path is clear for future instructions.
