Last year’s 27.8% increase in turnover at Speechly Bircham was by far the biggest of any law firm in the top 51-75 bracket. It came largely due to the City firm’s £14m acquisition of Westminster outfit Campbell Hooper over the summer of 2009; a piece of business that saw Speechly pick up most of the 50-lawyer firm without taking on any of the liabilities from its former premises.

“When the opportunity came up we took a deep breath and went for it – as such, 2009 proved a great leap forward for us,” reflects the firm’s managing partner Michael Lingens (pictured).
