After several years of spectacular growth, 2008 saw the economies of the Baltic states grind to a halt.In October, the European Commission forecast that Latvia - which grew by more than 10% in 2007 - would see its gross domestic product (GDP) contract by 0.8% this year and by 2.7% in 2009. The Commission expects a similar story in Estonia, which having enjoyed 6.3% growth in 2007 is expected to contract by 1.3% in 2008 and 1.2% the year after. The only bright spot is Lithuania, which the Commission believes will grow by 3.8% in 2008 and narrowly avoid a recession in 2009.You might think that this negative outlook would dent the confidence of the region's lawyers, but far from it. Indeed, many have welcomed this slowdown.
