Serious moves are afoot to reform South Africa’s arcane and inchoate consumer laws. Iona Dhladhla and Livia Dyer report

At present, consumer protection law in South Africa is composed of various common law principles and certain statutory measures that have been imposed through a range of different legislative enactments. However, this framework is fragmented and has failed to provide consumers with effective ways to uphold their rights. New legislation in the form of the Consumer Protection Bill 2008 is on its way – the aim of which is to create an enhanced and more comprehensive consumer protection regime.
