Recent legal incentives introduced by the Spanish Government and compliance with the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol will create new opportunities for Spanish lawyers in the area of renewable energy.

In recent years, following the tradition initiated in the early 1980s with the purpose of increasing our ‘energetic independence’ by reducing Spain’s dependence on fossil fuels, there has been a clear move by the Spanish Government, and within the energy sector itself, towards embracing renewable energy. From the total Spanish electricity production in 2003 (262,203 million MW), 20.4% was produced by so-called ‘special regime’ generators (renewable energies and cogeneration).
