As discussions to bring about the merger of Pinsents and Nicholson Graham & Jones break down, there is increasing evidence that mergers are getting harder to do – and are likely to become even more difficult to pull off successfully in the future.

The drivers for change are becoming more complex and firms have become quicker to recognise this. Size is still perceived to be important – when pitching for panel membership, for example, depth of resources will always be a key factor – but managing partners are highly aware that they should shy away from pursuing size for size’s sake.
