Management reshuffles at Slaughter and May are almost as rare as a lateral partner hire. But the news that half of the firm’s department heads (as well as half of its partnership board) are finally standing down will have made its more junior partners think that Christmas has come 12 months early.

The firm, on the other hand, will be keen to ensure that none of its more senior partners follow the example of former corporate head Michael Pescod, who quit the firm ahead of his retirement after failing to become senior partner.
