The introduction of a number of important pieces of ‘family friendly’ employment legislation should provide parents with more opportunities than ever before to strike a balance between work and family life.

While Northern Ireland (NI) is part of the UK, it has its own specific legislation implementing changes in the law. The Employment Relations (NI) Order 1999 contained significant new provisions introducing the right to parental leave and to time off for dependents. From April, new measures have come into force extending the rights of working parents. Maternity leave and pay has been increased and extended. The Maternity and Parental Leave etc (Amendment No. 3) Regulations (NI) 2002 amend and supplement the existing Maternity and Parental Leave etc Regulations (NI) 1999. The Paternity and Adoption Leave Regulations (NI) 2002 implement the new rights to paternity and adoption leave.
