The head of London giant Allen & Overy (A&O), John Rink, has announced his resignation more than a year ahead of the end of his term in a shock move that has thrust the firm into a new leadership battle.

He will leave the firm in May 2003, but will remain on A&O’s board as a non-executive member for a further year after that.
